Ponies, campaigns and alumni, oh my!

The office of Alumni Engagement will be hosting 1889 Club Day as a part of WCU’s Annual Shetland Society Day 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25 on the UC lawn. This event will offer the opportunity to pet Shetland ponies, eat food and get free swag! The event will also mark the launch of the ‘Fill the Western Sky’ campaign. Chancellor Kelli Brown will attend along with other special visitors. This year is also set to provide more information about philanthropy and why alumni engagement is an important aspect of community at WCU.

We focus on teaching students to stay engaged while still on campus, ensuring they remain connected post-graduation,” said Tenisea Higgins, assistant director of Annual Giving: Student & Young Alumni Engagement. “I also educate them on how to support philanthropy initiatives and stay involved as new alumni.”

Shetland Society Day began in 2020 in honor of faculty and staff donors. The namesake draws from former chancellor A.C. Reynolds’ 1912 purchase of Shetland ponies to carry supplies from Sylva to WCU campus.

You can find more information about the event on Engage or by contacting Tenisea Higgins at higginst@wcu.edu.
