The Cullowhee Recreation Center will soon open the doors of its new aquatic center, but not as quickly as hoped. In a meeting last Thursday, New Atlantic Construction proposed an Oct. 10 opening day – a full month after the initial Labor Day goal.
Cullowhee Recreation Center director Michael Hopkins said the construction has faced setbacks out of their control, but says staff are looking forward to opening day.
“We’re just excited for the opportunity we have with the aquatic center. It’s a game-changer for Jackson County,” he said.
In June 2020, a $20 million bond referendum was passed for the construction of the county’s first public aquatic center. The 30,000 square foot center on Cullowhee Mountain Road will feature a competition pool, leisure pool and updates to existing facilities.
The six-lane competition pool will feature a one meter diving platform, climbing wall and spectator area with removable seating. The leisure pool will accommodate activities like basketball, volleyball and water aerobics. It’ll also feature underwater seating and a splashpad for kids.
The aquatic center will be the first of its kind owned by Jackson County. Jackson County Recreation currently operates pools in Sylva and Cashiers but doesn’t own either. Hopkins said a pool owned and operated by the county will create new opportunities for involvement with the community.
Jackson County Recreation is currently hiring staff for the aquatic center. Unlike most outdoor pools, the center will be open year-round.
“We’re open seven days a week and only close a few days a year for holidays – We’ll need a large pool of part-time workers and lifeguards,” Hopkins said.
